No Kings Protest Draws 1,200 in Auburn 10/18
“Today 1,200 concerned and unpaid citizens turned out in Auburn to affirm our nation belongs to the people, not to kings,” said V. Bates, spokesperson for Auburn Indivisible, which sponsored the event. Auburn’s demonstration was among more than 2,700 in cities and towns engaged in the No Kings Day of Peaceful Action.
“With healthcare costs skyrocketing, daily expenses at new highs, and government services in decline, Auburn demonstrators are demanding a government that serves the many, not the powerful and wealthy few prioritized by this administration,” Bates said. Many are also concerned as the government censors history, attacks voting rights, weaponizes the military against American cities, targets immigrants, and erodes civil rights for historically marginalized groups, she said. Participants wrote cards of support for detained immigrants that will be delivered November 15 at a NW Detention Center Solidarity Day in Tacoma sponsored by Auburn Indivisible.
Bates reported that one participant represented many when they commented: “We support democracy! We have to make our voices heard and push back against fascism.” Bates remarked that many participants told her they attended today for love of their country and love of people in this country – their neighbors, their children and grandchildren, their elders and ancestors. Many others signaled their support with honks, waves, and fists of solidarity, she added.
